Northern lights farm
The Northern lights farm is a time-limited event in Goodgame Big Farm, and I get invited there by Nils Nordson - a farmer the narrator met while sailing around the North Cape. On my own Viking farm I raise penguins and seals, grow flax on the winter field and craft Viking gear to collect as many northern lights coins as I can. The event runs for as long as the ice bridge to the island holds, so roughly 30 days, and then the farm is gone.
The Northern lights farm is worth it mainly for the horseshoes for the Horse ranch and for the rewards from the individual story chapters, which I take back to my Main farm. And because even an unfinished farm turns into northern lights coins once the event ends, I have nothing to lose even if I never get everything built up to the max.
How I get to the Northern lights farm
I reach the Northern lights farm from the Airport, where Captain Barnacle is waiting for me - he flies me over as soon as I unlock the right chapter on the Main farm. The farm is run by Nils Nordson, who needs a hand getting his winter operation off the ground.
The island is reached across an ice bridge that holds for roughly 30 days. Once the thaw sets in I have to leave the farm, so it pays to start building on day one rather than waiting until the event is half over.
Fourteen buildings I can put up on the Northern lights farm
The Northern lights farm offers fourteen buildings, from the farmhouse through animal pens and orchards all the way to the Viking treasury, the only one that upgrades as far as level eight - everything else caps at level four. I pay for building and upgrading in snow dollars, and only the Fancy house is built with Gold.

Animal pens, fields and Viking crafting
On the winter field I pick between flax seed and sardine or herring eggs - every crop has its own growing time and yield. Sardines and herring get processed further into animal feed, while the flax goes off to the Viking workshop, which turns it into Viking clothing and accessories - a stylish tunic, a tankard, a mighty helmet and a comfy cloak.
The Penguin pond and the Seal pond are the animal buildings where I raise penguins and seals. The Tree grove, the Berry orchard and the Sheep pasture work as orchards and pasture, handing me wood, berries, sheep's wool and manure. Manure and plant remains then go into production buildings such as the Stone mill, the Silo or the Kelp tank, where they become winter fertilizers, including a premium one and an event version made from seaweed.
All told, there are twenty-five different products to handle on the Northern lights farm, so it pays to keep an eye on which resources are running low and to plan my buildings around whatever I need to make right now.
Snow dollars and the great exchange rate at the Viking treasury
The local currency on the Northern lights farm is snow dollars, and that is what I build and upgrade with. I get them by exchanging ordinary Dollars at the Viking treasury - the game calls the rate especially favorable and the snow dollars land straight away, but I have to wait out a cooldown before the next exchange. The more I upgrade the treasury, the bigger the amount I can swap in one go.
Besides the bank, the Northern lights farm trader drops by every now and then. He takes the northern lights coins I have collected in exchange for decorations and special seeds - special flax seed, say, or special sardine and herring roe, which I then plant in the Greenhouse on the Main farm and grow into a harvest that Captain Barnacle sends a ship for.
Story chapters, the leaderboard and what I keep once the event ends
The Northern lights farm has three chapters - In the Footsteps of the Vikings, A Good Team and The Real Recipe for Success. Finishing each one gets me a reward that unlocks later on the Main farm, including the horseshoes I need to get the Horse ranch going with my own horse, paddock, riding arena and stable.
Whoever collects the most northern lights coins finishes near the top of the event leaderboard and wins a prize. Simply collecting coins pays off too, whatever my placing, through the so-called hard work reward. On top of that, the trader Omar shows up during the event with time-limited special offers, which I can happily turn down and wait for the next batch.
After roughly 30 days the Northern lights farm disappears and I get northern lights coins for absolutely everything I built, upgraded, grew or produced there - so no half-finished building and no unharvested crop goes to waste.
