Winter field

Fields and meadows Viking farm

The winter field is one of the most obvious investments on the Viking farm - cheap to build, clearly worthwhile to upgrade, and two materials from a single building. There's no reason to hesitate with it.

What it's for

Winter fields grow flax and fish which are needed for processing later on.

Produces

The winter field is a 9x8 growing and breeding plot on the Viking farm where you get flax and fish - herring and sardines - which you then work with elsewhere on the farm, for instance in the Viking workshop. Unlike most Viking buildings, you buy this one normally in the shop. In the farm's economy it's a basic source of raw materials - either you produce them quickly for snow dollars, or you use special seed and spawn for a far bigger yield. It's a building for anyone building the Viking farm from scratch who doesn't want to buy flax, herring and sardines.

When to build it

The winter field is worth building right at the start of your Viking farm, because it's the basic source of flax, herring and sardines for further processing. Level one costs only 20 thousand snow dollars and takes 45 minutes to build, so money isn't the obstacle - it's the 8 workers you need to have free. How many winter fields you'll want depends on how much flax and fish you want in constant circulation.

Is it worth upgrading

Upgrading the winter field clearly pays off - between level one and the top level the yield doubles at the same production time and the same snow dollar cost. Herring jumps from 450 to 900 per 4 hours, sardines from 300 to 600 per 30 minutes and flax from 90 to 180 per 15 minutes, and special flax seed gives 4320 flax at max level instead of 2160 in the same 8 hours. The upgrade price climbs quickly to 1.7 million snow dollars at level four, though, so it's worth upgrading gradually as your snow dollar income grows.

Tip from a veteran player Special flax seed and special sardine spawn give a far bigger batch than normal production for snow dollars, 2160 flax against 90 and 1800 sardines against 300, so save them for moments when you need a lot of one material at once. That doesn't hold for special herring spawn, which only gives 70 herring, so for a bigger herring stock keep relying on the regular four-hour production.
Most common mistake The most common mistake is endlessly cycling the cheap fifteen-minute flax production for snow dollars and forgetting the slower but richer herring and sardines - then you're short on materials for processing elsewhere on the farm and you waste your workers' time.
