Mystery boxes
Mystery boxes are collectible inventory items that hide a random reward, from ordinary resources to diamonds or special building skins. There is a whole range of types, from the basic Mystery chest through the tiered bronze, silver, gold and diamond boxes all the way to themed and seasonal boxes tied to specific farms. For every box the game also shows the chance of each reward tier, so you can judge in advance whether opening it is worth it.
I treat mystery boxes as a nice bonus on the side, not as a main source of resources. They pay off mainly where you know exactly what the box holds, like the Pure diamond box or the Special green box, while with broad types such as the Mystery chest the reward is more of a lottery.
Mystery boxes wait in your inventory until you open them
Mystery boxes are among the items you keep in your inventory and open whenever you feel like it – the game files them in their own section together with other valuable rewards. The basic type, the Mystery chest, can contain practically anything from feed to decorations, so you never know in advance what exactly will drop.
Besides the chests you collect gradually while playing, you can also run into the Surprise box – you get that one as a thank you for watching an ad video, and just like with the other boxes the reward is random, from useful products to valuable currencies. After opening, the game always asks whether you want to try your luck one more time, and once you run out of boxes it tells you clearly with a message that you have none left in your inventory.
You can check the chance of a box's contents in advance
Boxes use a rarity system – rewards are split into tiers and the game shows how big a chance you have at each one. The principle is simple: if a tier says something like Common – 30%, it means you have a thirty percent probability of getting one of the items that fall into that category.
The Mystery boxes dialog also holds an overview of the chances put together from a real sample of a thousand openings of that box type, so before you use a box up you get a picture of whether the mix of contents is worth it for you. Personally I check this overview every time I come across a box I have not opened before – with the pricier types the chances differ a lot and it is worth knowing what I am getting into.
Bronze, silver and gold boxes form the basic value ladder
The Bronze mystery box, Silver mystery box and Gold mystery box run in that order from the most accessible to the most valuable. According to its description the bronze one mainly offers useful things, the silver one adds exotic seeds on top of that, and the gold variant, which exists in three tiers under the same name, can also contain gold mining permits.
Diamond boxes follow a similar tiering logic. The Bronzed diamond box contains a small amount of valuable items, the Silvered diamond box a medium amount and the Gilded diamond box a large amount, and in all three cases it is a mix of diamonds, seaweed products or tokens. The Pure diamond box stands apart, since its description mentions diamonds without a word about anything mixed in, and so does the Pink diamond box, where alongside diamonds there is also a chance at very high quality seaweed products.
Themed and seasonal boxes are tied to specific farms and times of year
A large group of boxes is bound to specific themed farms or times of the year, and their contents match that.
- The gold themed box contains random currencies for various shops in the game.
- The green themed box gives random seeds for fields, gardens or meadows.
- The orange themed box contains either super feed or super nectar.
- The blue themed box holds random premium feed.
- The purple themed box contains random kelp products.
- The Sweet mystery box, Frosty night mystery box, Festive mystery box, Frozen mystery box and Tropical mystery box carry items or currency tied to the matching themed farm, while the Sunken mystery box hands you a whole set of island decorations at once.
- The Organic mystery box contains organic coins, organic licences and seedlings.
- The Compass rose box hides silver or gold compass roses.
Seasonal boxes, meaning the Flower, Sun, Autumn and Winter mystery box, work in a similar way – each one can bring a decoration or two matching that time of year, tokens for the regular or the balloon wheel of fortune, or a selection of seaweed items.
Special boxes aim at one specific reward
The series of special boxes differs from the rest in that each one targets a single narrow type of reward, so you know in advance what you are playing for. The Special yellow box gives a random amount of Gold plus a chance at the gold jackpot worth 100,000 Gold, the Special green box contains exotic and valuable seeds, the Special red box brings themed buildings and the Special blue box a single random decoration.
The Special pink box focuses on seaweed humus in sizes L, XL and XXL, while the Special aquamarine box gives a random building skin, and according to its description some skins can be obtained more than once. The Special box, labelled as a blackbox, is deliberately mysterious by contrast – the game only hints that it gives off an unknown energy without revealing any specific contents.
