Fields and meadows Northern lights farm

The winter field is the cornerstone of the whole Northern lights farm and one of the first buildings I'd put up here and upgrade straight away.

What it's for

Winter fields grow flax and fish which are needed for processing later on.

Produces

The winter field is a plot of farmland on the Northern lights farm where you buy herring, sardines and flax outright with the winter farm currency, or grow them from special seeds and roe. So unlike the classic fields on the main farm, you're not sowing and waiting for things to grow, you're paying directly for the finished product. It's a key source of materials for the stone mill (herring and sardines for feed) and for the Viking workshop (flax), so without it the supply lines across the whole Northern lights farm seize up fast. It takes up 9x8 tiles and it's a must for anyone building up seals and penguins on this farm.

When to build it

You can buy the winter field in the shop right from the start of the Northern lights farm, and given how cheap the first level is (20,000 for just 45 minutes of building time) there's no reason to hesitate. Because it feeds three different chains at once - feed for seals, feed for penguins and production in the Viking workshop - it pays to put up several of them side by side straight away, otherwise the field becomes the bottleneck for the rest of the farm.

Is it worth upgrading

Upgrading pays off almost every time here, because the output doubles for the same price and the same production time - herring jumps from 450 to 900 in the same 4 hours and for the same 2,160 winter currency, and it's the same story with sardines and flax. The upgrade prices also climb sensibly (80,000, 350,000, 1.7 million), so working your way up to the higher levels pays for itself faster on this field than on most of the other buildings in this batch.

Tip from a veteran player When the game offers you special flax seeds or special sardine roe, use them here first - you'll get a far bigger haul out of them (2,160 flax against 90 and 1,800 sardines against 300) than when you pay in snow dollars. It doesn't work that way with special herring roe though, they only give 70 herring, so stick to normal production for herring.
Most common mistake Players often build just one winter field and then wonder why they're short of herring for seal feed and flax for the workshop at the same time - a field can only produce one thing at a time, so more materials means more fields.
