Gold in Big Farm

Gold is the premium currency in Big Farm, and it is tied to special buildings, decorations and the option to instantly finish a job that is still running on the farm. Unlike dollars, which cover the everyday running of the farm, gold is mainly there to speed things up and to get hold of things I would never reach with dollars. I bump into it at every turn in the shop, but now and then the game hands me some on its own.

I treat gold as a reserve for special buildings, decorations and those moments when I simply don't feel like waiting for production to finish. It isn't needed to progress in the game, but it speeds progress up nicely and opens up things dollars will never buy.

Gold is the premium currency, dollars keep the farm running day to day

Big Farm works with two currencies and each one covers something different. Gold is the premium currency – I use it to buy special buildings and decorations I can't get hold of any other way, to instantly finish production or construction that's already running, and to unlock further special features on the farm. Dollars, on the other hand, keep the farm ticking over – I pay with them for practically everything in the Build and Farm management menus, for production costs and for the initial investment in new buildings.

Dollars flow in mainly from selling my own products and as rewards for completed quests, so as long as I play actively I always have plenty. Gold can be bought in the shop, but the game also gives it to me on its own – as a reward for reaching a higher player level, as a daily login bonus or for completing selected quests.

The piggy bank fills up as I grow crops and pays out when I buy it

There's one special way of collecting gold, and that's the piggy bank in the shop. It fills up on its own as I grow products on my fields – every harvest adds a little to it. Before I can crack it open, though, the piggy bank has to hold at least the minimum amount of gold the game requires.

Once the piggy bank is full, I get the option to buy it and collect the gold inside at a favourable price. So the piggy bank isn't a free source of gold, it's an offer in the shop that rewards regular farming with a better ratio of price to currency.

The daily package raises its gold bonus when I buy it several days in a row

The shop also offers a daily package whose gold bonus grows when I buy it a few days in a row. The purchase is limited to one gold bonus per day, though – if I reach for another daily package on the same day, I'll only get the basic contents without the increased bonus.

This mechanic makes sense mainly during periods when I'm planning to invest in the farm regularly; with a one-off purchase there's obviously no way to make use of the bonus for a run of days.

Gold helps me most where dollars can't stand in for it

From experience, I don't put gold into things I'll end up buying for dollars anyway with a bit of patience. I save it for special buildings and decorations that the shop sells only for gold, and for those moments when I need production or construction finished right now, not in a few hours.

  • Special buildings and decorations unavailable for dollars
  • Instantly finishing production or construction in progress
  • Unlocking further special features on the farm

Buildings and products mentioned in the text

Tip from a veteran player Before I spend any gold, I check whether I can get the same thing for dollars – I keep my gold for buildings and decorations that can't be obtained any other way, and for cutting the queue when I'm in a hurry.
Most common mistake The most common mistake I used to make was blowing my first bit of gold on the first decoration I liked the look of. These days I save it for buildings available only for gold, or for the moment when I really need to speed up production that's already running, not for little extras I'll end up buying for dollars sooner or later anyway.
