The stone mill turns herring into seal feed and sardines into penguin feed, which makes it the link between the winter field and both water animals on the Northern lights farm and the Festive farm. Without it you can't feed seals or penguins at all, because the premium feed from events won't keep them going long term. It sits on an 8x7 area and it's a classic support production building rather than a goal in itself. It's for anyone planning to build a penguin pond or a seal pond.

When to build it

You need to build the mill before you get a penguin pond or a seal pond, because without feed from the mill you have nothing to give the animals. The first level costs only 15,000 and takes a mere 20 minutes to build, so there's no reason to put it off. One mill covers both ponds comfortably, or a second one if you want to feed both animals at once without queueing.

Is it worth upgrading

Upgrading the mill doesn't increase how much feed you get, it's still only 10 units per batch, but it halves the production time - seal feed goes from 4 hours to 2 and penguin feed from 30 minutes to 15. Level 2 is still cheap at 60,000, but levels 3 and 4 already cost 800,000 and 5,000,000 and need 20 and 30 workers respectively, so I'd leave those until the ponds themselves are upgraded.

Tip from a veteran player Since one batch of feed is always just 10 units, it pays to check in on the mill regularly and to queue up both types of feed in turn, so the animals aren't left without food any longer than they have to be.

Most common mistake An early mistake is building the seal pond or the penguin pond before the mill - the animal then sits waiting for its first batch of feed and you lose time you could have spent getting production going.
