How to get your Gourmet farm going

I unlocked the Gourmet farm the moment I had every expansion bought on my main farm, and it turned out to be a good move - it's a farm built purely around food, where you cook dishes from recipes using ingredients from your own fields, orchards and animal buildings. Here I go through when unlocking it pays off, how you switch between farms, what to build first on the Gourmet farm and how the water mill, gardens, orchards and animal buildings work.

When unlocking the Gourmet farm pays off

There are two ways to unlock the Gourmet farm - either by steadily levelling up, or by buying all 25 expansions on your main farm. Both routes lead to the same place, so pick the one that suits you better.

If you like working your way up through the levels and you're in no hurry, just keep playing and the farm will unlock on its own once you reach the required level. If, on the other hand, your main farm is already well developed and you're only a few expansions short of the full 25, it's worth buying the rest - you'll get the Gourmet farm sooner that way.

Unlocking it then costs you 50,000 Dollars and 5,900 Gold. Before you hand over that money, I'd recommend having your current harvest sorted on the main farm and your buildings under construction taken care of, so the purchase doesn't stop you in the middle of a job.

How you switch between the main farm and the Gourmet farm

You move between farms straight from your village - the Gourmet farm shows up as an icon next to the main farm and all you have to do is click it. The other option is to open the menu under your experience points and switch farms from there.

Both farms run independently - the ingredients you grow or produce on the Gourmet farm stay there and you use them right there for recipes. If you want to keep track of which farm is which, you can rename each one in the Settings menu.

What to build first on the Gourmet farm

Right after unlocking it you get the Cabin as the farm's main building, which you upgrade step by step all the way to level 10. Around it, at level 19, you unlock several basic buildings at once, so it makes sense to build them in this order.

  1. Water mill for 10,000 Dollars - the cheapest and at the same time a key production building, which you can upgrade all the way to level 9.
  2. Garden for 40,000 Dollars (max. level 9) or Fertile garden for 500 Gold (max. level 10) - depending on whether you currently have dollars or gold to spare.
  3. Goat stable for 40,000 Dollars (max. level 10), or its seasonal variants, the Viking goat stable or the Northern lights goat stable, for the same price.

Once you've got these three up and running, keep going by farm level - the Silo comes at level 20 for 40,000 Dollars, the Almond orchard and the Doghouse at level 24 (both for 50,000 Dollars), the Composter at level 25 for 40,000 Dollars and the Duck coop at level 26 for 70,000 Dollars. Leave the Donkey stable and the Peach orchard for levels 28 and 29 respectively, when plenty of other houses and decorative buildings open up as well.

How the water mill works

Water mill

The water mill is a production building you put up straight away at level 19 for 10,000 Dollars. It's there to turn the ingredients you grow right on your own farm - from your fields and orchards, for example - into finished dishes that you then use in recipes.

You can upgrade the mill all the way to level 9, so it's worth investing in it as you go, whenever you have dollars to spare. Since it's one of the very first buildings you have available on the Gourmet farm, keep it a priority over the pricier animal buildings and orchards - without processed ingredients you simply won't get to any dishes.

How gardens, orchards and animal buildings work

Garden

The Garden and the Fertile garden work just like ordinary fields - you sow seed, wait and harvest. On the Gourmet farm you harvest things like dandelion, lamb's lettuce or barley from them, and for each of these crops you'll also come across special seed that gives a better yield.

Orchards come later and have higher level requirements - you open up the Almond orchard at level 24 for 50,000 Dollars and the Peach orchard only at level 29 for 120,000 Dollars. Both cap at level 9, and you process their fruit, almonds and peaches, the same way as crops from your fields - on into cooking dishes.

The animal buildings - the Goat stable, the Duck coop and the Donkey stable - need feed to keep them running. For each animal you'll find feed in three qualities, from basic through premium to super feed, so you can choose whether you want a faster basic cycle or would rather invest in better feed. You build the Goat stable and its seasonal variants from level 19, the Duck coop from level 26 and the Donkey stable from level 28.

Buildings and products mentioned in the text

The Gourmet farm makes sense once your main farm is developed enough that you either reach the required level naturally, or you already have almost all 25 expansions together. Build the water mill, the garden and the goat stable first, because they're the cheapest and they unlock together, and only then add orchards and more animal buildings as your level allows. That way you'll always have ingredients for recipes on hand and you won't be waiting around for one missing item.
