What it's for

Grows in the garden and can be used for a variety of productions including for natural dyes.

Onions are a basic vegetable you grow in the garden buildings on the Gourmet farm, from the plain Garden through the Fertile garden and Beach garden up to the Glorious, Deluxe and Spectacular garden. They count as a Primary resource, so you can also buy them in the shop for 100 Dollars, and they are available from level 0. In the game they are the input for four different production lines at once - special seeds, bakery recipes, Labskaus and dyes. That means you will need them pretty much all the time, not just now and then.

How to get it

The quickest way is regular planting on any of the garden buildings - in 3 hours you get 33 onions at level 1, and the yield grows as you upgrade the building, reaching 60 at level 5 and as much as 138 in the Glorious garden. Planting Special onion seeds takes 8 hours but yields far more, 90 at level 1 and 306 at level 5, so it pays off when you want to build up a bigger stock in one go. Buying in the shop only makes sense when you need a few onions right away and don't feel like waiting for the harvest.

What to do with it

You send onions to the Nursery or Farm laboratory to make Special onion seeds, to the Bakery for Onion soup in a bread bowl and Apple chutney, to The Mermaid Bay for Labskaus, and to the Dye factory or Efficient dye factory for yellow, orange and green dye.

Tip from a veteran playerOnions are the input for three dyes at once - yellow, orange and green - orange shares the recipe with beetroot and green with cabbage, so before you start a batch of dyes it pays to have all three crops stocked up at the same time.
Most common mistakeA common mistake is to rely only on the cheap three-hour planting and then have both the dye factory and the bakery waiting in line at the same time - for smooth running it pays to alternate with the eight-hour planting from seeds so the harvest covers all the follow-up productions.
