What it's for

Bred in winter fields and can be made into seal feed in the stone mill.

Herring grow on the winter fields of the Viking farm, the Northern lights farm and the Festive farm, and in the Stone mill I turn them into Seal feed. They unlock from farmer level 30, I can't buy them in the Shop, and the base value per unit is 150 Snow dollars, five times as much as sardines. In the farm economy they're the input for seal feed; without them I can't take care of the seals. Unlike sardines and flax, herring have the roles of the fast and slow recipes swapped around.

How to get it

The standard recipe for 2160 Snow dollars takes 4 hours and yields 450 units on a level 1 winter field and up to 900 on level 4, while Special herring roe finishes a batch in just 30 minutes, but with a yield of only 70 to 141 units depending on the field level. When I need a few herring quickly, I reach for the roe; when I have time to let the field run for a long while, the standard recipe for dollars with the higher yield pays off.

What to do with it

I process herring in the Stone mill into Seal feed.

Tip from a veteran player Watch out, with herring the fast recipe gives few units and the slow recipe for dollars gives a lot, which is the reverse of sardines or flax.

Most common mistake The most common mistake is applying the same strategy to herring as to sardines or flax and expecting the short recipe to give a big yield; with herring it's exactly the other way around.
