What it's for

Oat grows in fields and can be made into sheep feed in the mill.

Oats are a basic crop you grow on a Field, Fertile field or Wintry fertile field from farm level 18. They can also be bought straight from the shop for 50 dollars. In the game they're processed mainly in the Windmill into feed for sheep, so they tie into sheep farming.

How to get it

The cheapest way is to sow oats directly on a Field for 115 dollars per sowing, which at lower field levels gives 40 to 65 pieces in 2 hours depending on the level of the plot - the higher the field level, the more pieces for the same price. The second option is to sow using 1 unit of Special oat seeds, which gives far more oats, 240 to 400 pieces, but takes 6 hours, so it suits times when you'll be away from the game for a while. The recipe is the same on the Field, Fertile field and Wintry fertile field, the type of field has no effect on the yield. Buying in the shop for 50 dollars only makes sense in a quick pinch when you need a few pieces right now and don't feel like waiting for the harvest.

What to do with it

The main processing of oats happens in the Windmill, or the Efficient windmill, where they become sheep feed. Oats are also the ingredient for Special oat seeds, which are produced by the Nursery and the Farm laboratory - these seeds then go back into sowing oats as a faster variant with a higher yield.

Tip from a veteran player When I'm planning a longer break from the game, I sow oats using Special oat seeds - the 6-hour batch gives noticeably more pieces than repeated short sowings for dollars.

Most common mistake A common mistake is treating oats only as an ingredient for sheep feed and not producing Special oat seeds from them, which means you miss out on the more efficient long sowing cycle with a higher yield.
