What it's for
You can load grapefruits onto the ship as soon as it docks in the harbor and the captain asks for them. You can't sell grapefruits.
Grapefruits are an exotic fruit you harvest in the Greenhouse on the Main farm, Gourmet farm or Flower farm from level 30. They are not a regular crop to sell, but stock for Captain Barnacle, you load them onto his ship whenever it docks in the harbor and asks for grapefruits. In the farm economy grapefruits therefore work as a trade good for ship contracts, not as a source of money from the market. On top of that, part of the harvest goes back into production, because you have better seeds made from grapefruits in the Farm laboratory.
How to get it
The highest yield per hour in the Greenhouse comes from the recipe with Special grapefruit seeds, on the first greenhouse level it gives you 606 pieces in 46 minutes, by far the best ratio of all three recipes. The recipe with Grapefruit seeds takes only 30 minutes but gives just 26 pieces, so it is only useful when you have no special seeds on hand and need to top up a small amount quickly. Premium grapefruit seeds yield a one-off 2982 pieces in 6 hours, which is great overnight or when you are leaving the game for a longer time, even though per hour they fall a little behind the special seeds. You first have to produce the special seeds in the Farm laboratory from your own grapefruits though, so it pays to always keep a stock for reinvestment.
What to do with it
You deliver grapefruits to Captain Barnacle when the ship in the harbor is asking for this very crop, that is their main and practically only outlet. The second use is inside your own production, you put stored grapefruits into the Farm laboratory, where they are turned into Special grapefruit seeds for a more efficient next round of growing.
