The chicken coop is cheap, available early and useful for the long haul, so it's worth having on the farm from the first minute and upgrading as you go. I wouldn't worry about the tenth level, though, until you have diamonds to spare and player level 124.

The Rural chicken coop is one of the three basic animal buildings on the main farm alongside the pigsty and the cowshed, and its main product is eggs, which you make from corn turned into chicken feed in the windmill. As a by-product the coop drops manure into the silo, so it's also one of the sources of a material without which production on the farm grinds to a halt. It takes up a 5x5 space and the first level costs just 1,500 dollars, so every player can afford it from the very start of the game. It suits anyone who wants a steady flow of eggs for follow-up recipes and needs to keep the silo topped up.

When to build it

The coop is one of the very first buildings you should have on the farm - the first level is unlocked at player level 0, so go ahead and build it during the tutorial as soon as you have a field of corn and a windmill. How many you'll need depends mainly on how big a production chain with eggs and manure you want to run - for normal play on the main farm a single coop kept me going for a long time, and I just upgraded it step by step before I looked at more of them. Don't put this one off until higher levels, because without eggs and manure your other production will soon stall as well.

Is it worth upgrading

Upgrading is worth it pretty much all the way through, because output grows faster than the feed cost - at the first level, 10 units of ordinary chicken feed give you 31 eggs and 10 manure in 13 minutes, while at the maximum tenth level the same input over the same time gives 62 eggs and 24 manure. The first few levels come quickly and cheaply, the second level costs only 3,500 dollars, but from the seventh to the ninth level the prices and build times shoot up, and the tenth level already demands 10,000 diamonds and player level 124, so it's more of a late goal than something you'll deal with straight away.
