What it's for
The dockyard is where you can buy, upgrade and equip boats to send on deep sea fishing trips. Be sure to build yourself a big fleet so you can explore what the surrounding waters have to offer!
The dockyard right in the Fishing area does something different from the building of the same name on the Flower farm – here you process the catch from your boats into equipment that comes in handy on your next trips out. It comes into service on its own as soon as you reach level 19 on the farm, so you don't buy it in the shop like the boats. At seven by five fields it takes up less room than any of the big boats, but it does need something to process, so there's no point building it without a working boat next to it. It suits anyone who wants to get more out of their oysters, mussels, prawns, herring, tuna, lobster, cod and salmon than just goods to sell.
When to build it
You get access to the dockyard automatically at level 19, so the first level takes care of itself, but it's worth putting it to work the moment you get there. The further levels do cost real money, from 750 000 dollars for the second level at level 29 up to 10 000 000 dollars for the eighth level at level 119, so upgrading it goes hand in hand with how your farm and your boats' catches grow. It makes sense to build it once your boats bring in a steady supply of fish and you want to turn them into equipment as well, not just sell them.
Is it worth upgrading
Unlike with the boats, upgrading the dockyard doesn't change how many goods you need for one piece of equipment – it's still 2 oysters or 17 prawns per piece – but the processing time gets shorter, dropping from an hour to just under half an hour at the highest level. So it pays to upgrade steadily as your catch grows, because faster processing means you push the same amount of fish through in half the time.
