The island field is the basic raw material building of the entire island farm, because it sends grapes and peanuts to the tropical mill and oranges straight to the beach bar. On a 9x8 plot you grow either for island dollars or with special seeds, which cost nothing and with oranges and peanuts hand you a big harvest in one go. It fits anyone who wants their own steady supply of ingredients instead of relying on the market.

When to build it

It is worth building right at the start of the island farm, and several at once, because one field on its own will barely cover what the mill and the bar need in grapes, peanuts and oranges all at the same time. The first level costs only 20000 Island dollars and takes 45 minutes to build, so the entry cost is low.

Is it worth upgrading

This is where upgrading genuinely pays off, because the yield grows to roughly two and a half times for the same inputs and the same time, grapes go up from 350 to 875 for the same 8000 Island dollars and 5 hours 50 minutes. Peanuts and oranges jump just as sharply, so an early investment in a higher level quickly comes back to you in sheer volume of production.
