What it's for
A fancy house accommodates more workers than a simple house. Its luxury also makes your workers happier.
The fancy house does the same job as the simple one, housing workers on the Island farm, it just does it more efficiently. For the same 7x7 footprint and the same hit to dissatisfaction, it holds considerably more people. It's bought exclusively with gold, so it's clearly the premium option for players who want a more compact and happier farm at the same time.
When to build it
It's worth building as soon as you have gold to spare and want to raise your worker capacity without taking up more space. At level one it gives 15 residents for the same -50 dissatisfaction as a simple house that only holds 8, so the math is obvious right from the start.
Is it worth upgrading
Upgrading makes sense, because at level four it holds 33 residents for the same -65 dissatisfaction as a simple house at its own level four with 20 residents. The price rises from 250 to 6500 gold, which is manageable if you're playing steadily.
