What it's for

The Lizard pen is the basic animal building on the Obsidian farm and it does exactly what the name says – it turns lizard feed into lizards, with obsidian manure as a byproduct. You have to make the feed first in the feed kitchen, so the pen never works on its own, only as part of a longer production chain. Both the lizards and the manure get processed further or sold, so this building is for anyone who has started on the Obsidian farm and wants a steady supply of goods for trade and for further production. It's one of the two main animal buildings on this farm alongside the Orca pool.

When to build it

The Lizard pen makes sense as soon as you unlock the Obsidian farm, because the first level asks for only 10000 obsidian dollars and goes up in just under an hour and a half. In practice you'll only really get it running once you have at least one feed kitchen making lizard feed, otherwise the pen will just stand there empty. It pays to have several side by side on the farm, because one batch takes only 36 minutes and with a single pen you'll be stockpiling feed faster than you can use it up.

Is it worth upgrading

Brace yourself for a small letdown here – according to the level table, the production itself doesn't change at all between the first and the last level, it's always the same 10 feed for 44 lizards and 8 manure in 36 minutes. Upgrading therefore neither speeds up the batch nor makes it bigger; the main gain is the big jump in XP (from 300 to 9500 at the top level) and the fact that you need a higher level for the growing worker count and for the player level unlocks. If all you care about is lizards and manure, you can happily leave the pen at a low level for a long time and spend your money elsewhere.

Tip from a veteran player The feed kitchen on the Obsidian farm makes lizard feed more slowly (an hour for 10 units) than the pen uses it up (36 minutes per batch), so if you want to keep the pen running non-stop, you may well need two feed kitchens for one pen.

Most common mistake The most common mistake is building the pen before you've sorted out your supply of saffron and dragon fruit for the feed – with nothing to make feed from, the pen just stands there waiting most of the time.
