What it's for
This group of houses provides the perfect balance between space and comfort for your farm workers.
The Grand house is housing for your workers and you'll find it on the Main farm, the Gourmet farm and the Flower farm. It takes up a lot of space - 15x5 tiles - but in return it gives you a decent number of new workers that you can then assign to production buildings. Like every house, though, it brings discontent with it, so you have to make sure production on the farm doesn't get more expensive. It's for anyone who needs more workers and at the same time has enough decorations and other housing to keep happiness within reason. It's one of the main ways to expand your workforce on the farm.
When to build it
Building the Grand house makes sense as soon as you start running out of workers for new production buildings - the first level is available from player level 1 for 1350 dollars and goes up in 15 minutes, so there's no reason to wait. How many you'll need depends on how many production buildings you want to run at once - on a bigger farm it's normal to build several houses side by side and pad them out with decorations so happiness doesn't drop too far. Before you build one, check that you can take the drop in happiness, otherwise it will make all production on that farm more expensive.
Is it worth upgrading
Upgrading this house pays off mainly at the lower levels, where you get a solid boost in residents for reasonable money - going from level 1 to level 2 adds 15 residents for 30000 dollars. The higher you go, though, the more discontent each new resident costs you - at level one it's roughly 1.5 points of discontent per resident, around level seven it's already over 2.4 points, so the benefit to drawback ratio gets worse. Between level six (from player level 49) and level seven (from player level 124) there's also a huge jump in the required player level, so you won't reach the higher levels for a long time even if you have plenty of money for the upgrade. The price grows enormously as well, from 1560000 dollars at level six to 46000000 dollars at level ten, so the last levels are more for developed accounts with money to spare.
